This lithograph sets out elevations and plans for culvert and trestle bridges, showing the same structures from the side and from above so a builder could work from them. It appears as plate 7 in a civil engineering text, likely the treatise associated with Dennis Hart Mahan, a longtime professor at West Point who taught engineering to generations of officers. Timber trestles and stone or masonry culverts were the workhorse structures of early American railroads and roads, carrying tracks and traffic across ravines and streams. The caption card gives no date, so the drawing's exact period is unknown, but its purpose as instruction is clear.
