The text of this 1918 poster ties a bank's subscription drive to the promise of a victorious soldier's homecoming, asking French buyers to subscribe to Crédit du Nord. Wartime governments across Europe, France included, financed the fighting largely through national war loans sold to the public, and banks like Crédit du Nord, founded in Lille, acted as channels for those subscriptions. Posters like this one used the emotional pull of returning troops to encourage ordinary savers to lend their money. The image was made in the last year of the war, when the outcome was still uncertain and the hope of peace was a powerful appeal.
