Aimed at men on leave in the capital, this 1917 color lithograph promotes the Cercle National pour le soldat de Paris, a club meant to give French soldiers a place to gather and find some respite from the front. It was signed "JOB," the pen name of the illustrator Jacques Onfroy de Bréville, whose patriotic images of French troops circulated widely during the war. The subjects cataloged for the poster, military personnel, casualties and flags, reflect the themes of duty and sacrifice that ran through much of wartime French advertising and public appeals.
