The record credits this 1856 lithograph to a young Winslow Homer, whose initials "WH" appear as its monogram, making it one of his earliest surviving prints. It responds to the caning of Senator Charles Sumner on the floor of the Senate that May, when Representative Preston Brooks of South Carolina beat him with a cane after Sumner's speech on Kansas. The subjects listed include Brooks, Sumner, Lawrence Keitt, Robert Toombs, Stephen Douglas, John Crittenden, and Henry Ward Beecher, so the sheet draws its audience into the wider national quarrel over slavery that the attack came to symbolize.
