Frances Wright, the Scottish-born writer and lecturer, appears here as the frontispiece to the first volume of Elizabeth Cady Stanton's History of Woman Suffrage, published by Fowler & Wells in 1881. Wright (1795–1852) was among the earliest American women to speak publicly on politics, slavery, and women's rights, often before mixed audiences that drew hostile criticism. Placing her image at the front of the work signaled that the suffrage movement traced its roots to these pioneering public speakers. The engraving was made by J. Gorbitz after a work by J.C. Buttre, a well-known engraver of the period.
