Gazal, the horse named in this print's title, is shown being walked and exercised on a halter, a routine part of keeping a working or prized animal in condition. The photograph was made by Abdullah Frères, the Constantinople studio run by the Abdullah brothers, who were among the best-known photographers serving the Ottoman court in the late 1800s. It belongs to an album of horses at the Imperial Stud Farm near Istanbul, assembled within the collection of Sultan Abdul Hamid II, which is now held by the Library of Congress. Albumen prints like this one, with their warm brown tones, capture both the horse and the careful documentation of imperial holdings.
