A horse led through its paces on a halter is the focus of this albumen print, which the album labels as a drill at the Imperial Stud Farm in the outskirts of Istanbul. The photograph was made by Abdullah Frères, the Constantinople studio run by the Abdullah brothers, who were among the most prominent commercial and court photographers in the Ottoman capital. It belongs to the Abdul-Hamid II Collection, assembled during the sultan's reign, when the palace valued horses as symbols of state and military prestige. The caption appears in both Ottoman Turkish and French, a reminder of how the sultan's court presented itself to foreign visitors.
