The record names only "Goron," and the caption card is marked as unverified, so this portrait is best understood through the man it most likely shows: Jules Goron, a French police official who rose through the Sûreté, the detective branch of the Paris police. Late nineteenth-century Paris police work was closely tied to photography, since officers used portraits and bureau records to identify suspects and track criminal networks. The card's tracings of "Police" and "B.I." point to that police setting. Goron later drew public attention with memoirs describing his cases, which made his face familiar to readers of the period.
