The caption card names the sitter as Desmoulins, and the tentative identification as Camille Desmoulins (1760-1794) is worth keeping in view, since the record still carries a question mark on the name. If it is him, the portrait shows a figure from the early years of the French Revolution. Desmoulins was a lawyer turned pamphleteer whose speeches and newspapers helped rouse Parisian crowds in 1789. He later fell out with the Terror's leaders and was executed in 1794, alongside his close ally Georges Danton. The engraving's undated state makes it hard to say when it was made, so viewers should treat the sitter's identity and the print's date as open questions.
