This 1836 engraving by Robert Graves reproduces Thomas Phillips's portrait of the poet Lord Byron, shown in the Albanian dress he wore during his travels in the Ottoman lands. Published in London by Hodgson & Graves, it appeared about a dozen years after Byron's death at Missolonghi in 1824, while he was backing the Greek War of Independence, and it kept his image before readers who admired his poetry. The impression bears the collector's mark of Gardiner Greene Hubbard, whose collection later entered the Library of Congress.
