Abraham's dream!" plays on the President's first name and the Biblical patriarch, and its subtitle borrows a line from Thomas Campbell's poem "Lochiel's Warning," where "coming events cast their shadows before" suggests that the future can be sensed in advance. Published by Currier & Ives on Nassau Street in New York around 1864, the lithograph belongs to the flood of cartoons produced during Abraham Lincoln's reelection campaign, when the outcome of the Civil War and the election was still uncertain. Catalogers attribute the drawing to Louis Maurer, who worked extensively for the firm.
