This portrait is catalogued under the name Harry A. Wheeler, though the Library of Congress notes that the title comes from caption cards and negative labels that have not been independently verified, so the sitter's identity should be treated as provisional. It is a glass negative of 5 by 7 inches or smaller, the format Bain News Service used for much of its work. The Bain agency, founded in New York by George Grantham Bain, sold news photographs to newspapers, and its collection captures a wide range of early twentieth-century public life. Because no date is recorded, the picture is best placed in the broader context of that agency's active years, roughly the first two decades of the 1900s.
