Identified only by her married name, Mrs. Harry Vingut appears here as a glass negative from the Bain News Service, a New York picture agency that sold news and society photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century. The Library of Congress notes that the title comes from caption data the agency recorded, which it has not independently verified, so the sitter's identity and the sitting's date remain uncertain. The collection as a whole, tens of thousands of glass negatives, offers a broad view of American public life from roughly 1900 to 1920, and portraits like this one show how studio and society photography was packaged for the press during that period.
