Two prominent Washington women, Ruth Hanna McCormick and Alice Roosevelt Longworth, appear in this picture leaving Mercy Hospital on January 17, 1910. Alice was the daughter of President Theodore Roosevelt and the wife of Ohio congressman Nicholas Longworth, while Ruth was married to Medill McCormick. The record does not say why they were at the hospital, and the caption rests on details the Bain News Service wrote on the negative that have not been independently checked. Bain's agency supplied news photographs to newspapers, so pictures like this were made for quick publication.
