The only name recorded for this glass negative is Harry B. Brown, and the Library of Congress notes that this identification comes from unverified data on the negative or its caption card. The plate belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York picture agency that George Grantham Bain founded around 1899 to supply newspapers with photographs of people and events. Its photographers worked quickly on glass plates of 5 by 7 inches or smaller, so many of the agency's negatives are direct portraits or news views from the early twentieth century. Without a date, the sitter's role and the exact year remain open questions.
