A horse-drawn carriage, a team of horses, and a pair of dogs give Marguerite Zorach's 1930 lithograph *Maine Sheriff* its rural character. Zorach, a painter and printmaker who spent many summers in Maine with her husband, the sculptor William Zorach, often drew on the state's landscape and everyday life. By 1930 automobiles had spread widely, but horse-drawn vehicles still worked many country roads, so the print captures a transitional moment in rural New England. Her prints of Maine subjects often favor simplified forms and clear outlines, which make such scenes read as both documents and designs.
