Coleman's cafe in Greensboro, Alabama, a small town in the Black Belt of the state's west-central region, is pictured here in December 1971. Cafes of that era often served as informal meeting places, where townspeople gathered over coffee and meals and everyday local life unfolded in plain view. The print is a dye coupler color print, a process widely used for color photographs in the 1970s, and it entered the Library of Congress through an exchange in 1975. Its small size, about 9 by 13 centimeters, gives it a modest, snapshot-like quality worth noticing.
