Janie Gompers, a daughter of Samuel Gompers, is pictured here with Mr. Morrison, and the figure holding a cane at his side gives the portrait a formal, posed quality. Gompers led the American Federation of Labor for most of its early history, and the family's public image was part of the federation's broader effort to present organized labor as respectable and mainstream. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that documented city life and public figures in the late 1910s and early 1920s, made this picture as a glass negative. Viewers may notice streaks and blemishes, which come from the deterioration of the original coatings rather than from the scene itself.
