Preserved as an 8 by 6 inch glass negative rather than a paper print, this view is titled "U.S. Cavalry," though the record notes that the title comes from unverified data supplied by the National Photo Company. The company, based in Washington, D.C., produced a large body of city and national scenes in the early twentieth century, and this negative falls roughly between 1910 and 1920, when mounted troops still had a place in the U.S. Army before motorized units took over. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947, and its surface shows streaks and blemishes from natural deterioration of the original coating, which are worth keeping in mind when judging the image.
