Taken around 1898, the year Roosevelt left his post as assistant secretary of the Navy to raise the Rough Riders for the Spanish-American War, this portrait comes from a time before he held national office. The caption card's "Pres." label does not fit that date, since he did not become president until 1901, after William McKinley's assassination. The copyright credit to B.J. Falk, a New York portrait photographer of the period, is a more reliable clue to the picture's origin. Roosevelt's fame after the fighting at San Juan Hill in July 1898 drew public interest in portraits of him like this one.
