Dated on its caption card to around November 10, 1906, this portrait shows Theodore Roosevelt during his presidency, though the record notes that the date is unverified. By then he had been in office for nearly five years, having taken over after William McKinley's assassination in 1901 and won election in his own right in 1904. That autumn he became the first sitting U.S. president to travel outside the country, visiting the Panama Canal construction zone. Roosevelt cultivated a vigorous public image, and official portraits of this kind were part of how he presented himself to the nation.
