Taken around 1904, the year Roosevelt won a full term of his own, this portrait shows the president at the height of his public image. He had taken office in 1901 after the assassination of William McKinley, and he was known for his energetic, outdoorsy style and for his push for trust-busting and conservation. The print carries a copyright credit to photographer J. Martin Miller, which suggests it was made for wide public distribution. The date and other details come from an old, unverified caption card, so the year should be read as approximate.
