Annie Besant appears here in a sari, a striking choice for a British-born woman whose public life was built on her English upbringing and her debates in London. She had arrived in India in 1893 and settled at Adyar, near Madras, where the Theosophical Society had its headquarters, and she became a prominent voice for Indian self-rule. In 1916 she founded the Home Rule League, and in 1917 she was elected president of the Indian National Congress. Photographs like this one, from 1926, show how fully she had become identified with the country she had adopted.
