Among the many views of Agra's famous monument, this halftone print, made from a photograph by E.M. Newman, presents the Taj Mahal as the printed page carried it to readers between about 1880 and 1940. Shah Jahan commissioned the white marble mausoleum in the 1630s as a tomb for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal, and it was largely complete by the early 1650s. The halftone process broke a photograph into a pattern of tiny dots so it could be printed alongside type, which made images like this one common in books, magazines and travel publications of the period.
