Richard Pearson Hobson is remembered chiefly for his 1898 attempt to block the Spanish fleet at Santiago de Cuba by sinking the collier *Merrimac* in the harbor entrance during the Spanish-American War. He survived the attempt, was taken prisoner, and became a national hero, and he later served as a congressman from Alabama. This 1924 glass negative comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that produced portraits and news pictures of public figures in the early twentieth century. Its surface shows streaks and blemishes from the natural decay of the original coating, which is worth noting when judging the image's clarity.
