Richard Pearson Hobson appears in this glass negative, dated May 14, 1924, from the National Photo Company's Washington studio. In 1898, as a Navy lieutenant during the Spanish-American War, Hobson led an attempt to sink the collier *Merrimac* at the mouth of Santiago harbor in Cuba. He was captured but survived and was later exchanged, and he became a national figure. He later served as a congressman from Alabama and was known for his advocacy of prohibition. The plate shows the streaks and blemishes that come with age in early glass negatives, so some fine detail may be lost.
