Auto races at the Rockville Fair, photographed on August 25, 1923, give this glass negative a specific setting: a county fair where motor racing drew crowds in the early 1920s. The National Photo Company, a Washington commercial studio that documented the capital region and beyond, made the negative, and it was later donated to the Library of Congress by Herbert A. French in 1947. Glass plates like this one were the standard medium of the era, and the faint streaks and blemishes visible across the surface come from the natural deterioration of the original coatings over the decades.
