Fire engines frozen solid in ice at the scene of an "Equitable" fire set this glass negative apart from the other engine views on the board, though the record gives no date to tie it to a specific blaze. The title comes from caption cards and data supplied by Bain News Service, a New York picture agency that sold news photographs in the early twentieth century, so it should be read as unverified. Winter fires often left hoses, pumpers, and streets coated in ice as water sprayed and froze, which slowed crews and made equipment hard to operate. The negative is a small glass plate, a format that recorded fine detail for news pictures of the period.
