A fire on East 14th Street in 1916 is recorded on this small glass negative, a format that photographers of the period used for quick, portable work. The title comes from caption cards that the Bain News Service attached to its negatives, so the exact location and date are not independently verified. George Grantham Bain founded the agency to supply newspapers with news photographs, and its pictures of street fires and fire companies show how urban fire response was documented in the early twentieth century. The surviving record does not describe the fire's cause or damage, so the image is best read as a record of a city street and the crews working on it.
