The record dates this view of a Murray Street fire to February 19, 1915, but the title comes from caption cards and negative sleeves written by the Bain News Service and has not been independently verified, so the exact street and city remain uncertain. The picture survives as a small glass negative, a format news photographers relied on before flexible film became standard. It dates from the years when American fire departments were shifting from horse-drawn wagons to motorized engines. Bain's agency sold photographs like this one to newspapers, which made its fire scenes a useful record of both the blaze and the equipment fighting it.
