Charleston, South Carolina, appears here as a bird's-eye panorama dated 1872, seen from a high vantage point above the peninsula where the harbor meets the Ashley and Cooper rivers. The view is credited to C. N. Drie, a draftsman who produced many such city panoramas in the 1870s, when they let readers take in an entire town at a glance. Charleston was still recovering in these years from the Civil War and the great fire of 1861 that destroyed much of its downtown, so the map shows a city in the middle of rebuilding. Church steeples and wharves were the landmarks that defined the skyline, and they are worth looking for.
