This bird's-eye view shows Raleigh, the state capital of North Carolina, as it looked in 1872, with the Capitol building at the center of the city's planned grid. Panoramic maps like this one were popular in the 1870s, when lithographers drew American towns in perspective so that streets, houses, churches, and businesses could be read at a glance. The artist is recorded only as C. N. Drie, one of several makers who produced such city views during that boom. Looking closely, viewers can see how a small Southern capital was laid out in the years after the Civil War, when Raleigh was rebuilding and growing around its government buildings.
