Few spots on the Gettysburg field carry more weight than the Angle, the stretch of stone wall on Cemetery Ridge where Confederate troops briefly broke through the Union line on the third day of the battle in July 1863. This view shows the ground a half century later, when aging veterans of both armies returned for the 1913 anniversary reunion and walked the same fields where they had once fought hand to hand. The men in the foreground, set against the wall and open ground, reflect how the battlefield had become a place of reconciliation as well as remembrance. The gatherings drew tens of thousands of old soldiers, many of them in their late sixties and seventies.
