This woodcut shows a portable siege ladder, a device meant to be carried to a wall and set against it so that attackers could climb over fortifications. The record dates it to 1475 and files it under military art and siege warfare, so it likely comes from one of the illustrated military treatises that circulated in Europe in the decades after printing spread. Those books gave commanders and engineers a visual vocabulary for machines that had long been built by craftsmen in the field. The print is worth studying for its clear outline of the ladder's construction, which reflects how medieval and early Renaissance armies approached the old problem of taking a walled town.
