Press onward" is the motto on this hand-colored lithograph, which presents itself as a grand national Whig banner for Zachary Taylor and Millard Fillmore. Taylor, a general whose fame came from the Mexican War, had little record in party politics, and the Whigs nominated him in 1848 largely for his military reputation. Fillmore, a New York politician, was his running mate. The New York printer Nathaniel Currier issued the sheet, and its bright color and banner format were typical of the campaign prints that circulated that year. Taylor won the presidency in 1848.
