What sets this poster apart is its blank line, where each school was meant to hand-letter its own name above the word "Members." The printed instructions tell teachers to display it at a Lincoln's Birthday program and keep it up through the enrollment period, which ended on Washington's Birthday, when pupils pasted paper figures showing how many classmates had joined. The poster belongs to the American Red Cross's school drive of 1919, a few months after the end of World War I. Its patriotic flag and call to "national service" reflect how the Red Cross used schools to recruit young members for wartime and postwar relief work.
