Few campaign banners from the 1876 contest carry the Hayes and Wheeler ticket as plainly as this one, which pairs Rutherford B. Hayes, the Republican nominee for president, with William A. Wheeler for vice president. The 1876 race ended in one of the most disputed outcomes in American history: Samuel Tilden, the Democratic candidate, won the popular vote, but a handful of contested electoral returns left the result in doubt until a special commission awarded the disputed votes to Hayes. Banners like this one were carried in parades and hung at rallies, so they show how party committees sold their candidates to voters in the street as much as in print.
