The banner's own title sets it apart: it was made for the 1864 campaign, when Abraham Lincoln ran for reelection under the National Union label, a wartime coalition of Republicans and War Democrats. Its slogan, "Liberty, Union and Victory," speaks directly to that moment, when the Civil War had dragged on for three years and the outcome of the vote was far from certain. Large banners like this were carried in parades and rallies, where campaign organizations used bold lettering and patriotic imagery to rally voters. Looking at it today, the text is the main clue to its purpose: it presents the election as a choice between preserving the nation and abandoning the fight.
