Samuel J. Tilden of New York and Thomas A. Hendricks of Indiana head this Democratic ticket of 1876. Tilden, a reform-minded governor who had helped break up New York's Tweed Ring, won the popular vote but fell one electoral vote short once disputed returns from several states were counted. A special commission and the Compromise of 1877 gave the presidency to Republican Rutherford B. Hayes. Campaign material like this shows how parties presented their candidates in one of the most contested elections of the period.
