Mathematics is the focus here, and that sets this 1937 silkscreen apart from the trades and labor scenes that dominate much of the WPA poster collection. It was produced for the Federal theater Project in New York, with Charlotte Chorpenning credited as sponsor, a reminder that the federal arts programs of the Depression era also took on educational and vocational themes. Silkscreen posters like this one came out of the Federal Art Project's poster division, and their flat, bold color was meant to be read quickly from a street or a school hallway. The poster frames number-based careers as real paths to employment at a time when many people were searching for steady work.
