Few posters of the Depression era promoted math careers, which makes this one unusual. Blanche L. Anish designed it in 1936 as a silkscreen print, and the Federal theater Project in New York sponsored it, with Charlotte Chorpenning credited as the sponsor. The Works Progress Administration, later renamed the Work Projects Administration, employed artists through its arts programs to produce posters like this one, and silkscreen was a practical method for making many copies cheaply. The poster reflects the New Deal's wider concern with employment, showing mathematics as a range of working occupations during a period of high joblessness.
