The Elks lodge and opera house in Vicksburg, Mississippi, appear together in this view, a pairing that shows how a river city combined fraternal clubs with a stage for touring companies in the 1910s. The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks was founded in New York in 1868 and built lodge halls in towns across the country, often near the local theater where dances, lectures and traveling shows drew the community. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this large glass negative, sold views of American towns to railroads and publishers, so the photograph serves both as a local record and as national promotion.
