Vienna's opera house on the Ringstrasse, the grand boulevard built on the old city walls, is the subject here, and the building's history runs through the glass negative's date range. Architects August Sicard von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Nüll designed it in the Renaissance Revival style, and it opened in 1869 as the Court Opera, shortly after both men had died. The photograph dates from the years when the building still served the Habsburg court, before the monarchy fell in 1918 and it became the State Opera.
