Painted signage reading "Fire station" marks this Littleton, New Hampshire, building as a combined town hall and fire house, with an opera hall under the same roof, and horse-drawn carts and wagons stand in the street. The Detroit Publishing Company made the 8 by 10 inch glass plate negative sometime between 1900 and 1910, when the firm was documenting towns and scenery across the country for sale as views. Such civic buildings often held meetings, performances and fire equipment together, so the picture offers a useful look at small-town life before motor vehicles became common.
