The building is the Palais Garnier, Paris's grand opera house at the head of the Avenue de l'Opéra. Charles Garnier's design, chosen in a competition and opened in 1875, was a showpiece of the Second Empire, its facade crowded with sculpture and its interiors lavish. Between 1890 and 1920, when this photograph was likely taken, the opera house stood at the center of Parisian social life, and the surrounding boulevards bustled with carriages, streetcars and theatergoers. The print offers a useful view of how the city's public life and architecture looked in that era.
