Hetrick Opera House and the Oriental Hotel fill the foreground of this view of East Main Street in Chanute, Kansas. Small Midwestern towns of the late 1800s and early 1900s often built opera houses on their main commercial blocks, where traveling theater companies, lecturers, and concert performers drew audiences from the surrounding county. Hotels nearby catered to those visitors, so the pairing shows how a street could serve both local life and touring entertainment.
