A storefront that shared its building with a tailor is the detail that sets this photograph apart from other opera house views. May's Opera House stood in Piqua, a city in Miami County in western Ohio, and in the early 1900s many small American towns relied on such halls for traveling theater companies, lectures, and community gatherings. Ground-floor retail space like Jas. W. Brown's tailor shop was common in these buildings, which often rented storefronts to merchants while the upper floor hosted performances. The Library of Congress dates the print to somewhere between 1902 and 1930, a span that covers the heyday of the local opera house before motion pictures took over much of its audience.
