Bobtailhorse, a Siksika man, is the subject of this portrait, made around 1913 by Roland W. Reed, a photographer known for his many studies of Native peoples in the American West. The Siksika are one of the Blackfoot nations of the northern Plains, who acquired horses in the 1700s and built much of their travel, trade and hunting around them. Portraits from this decade often reflect a time when reservation life was reshaping Plains communities, so the name Bobtailhorse gains added meaning when read alongside the horse-themed gallery it belongs to.
