Few photographs from this period show the cramped interior of an emigrant ship as directly as this one, which is titled as a scene in the hold of the James Foster Jr. The caption promises "horrors," and the composition looks staged rather than candid, a common approach for images meant to dramatize conditions aboard. Passengers on long crossings were often packed into dim, poorly ventilated spaces below deck, where disease and bad sanitation posed serious risks. The card was issued by Morse's Gallery, whose Montgomery Street address is printed on it, and its title bears a U.S. Copyright Office notation.
