The lithograph's title, "Symptoms of a duel," and its list of named figures point to the House of Representatives in the late 1830s, when quarrels over insults and honor could end in challenges. The subjects include Henry A. Wise, the Virginia congressman, and several colleagues from the House and the Treasury Department. Printed in New York in 1839 by H.R. Robinson, a prolific lithographer of political satire, the sheet belongs to a period when caricature was a common way to mock Washington's public disputes and their tendency to turn violent. Dueling was illegal in many states but still practiced among gentlemen, and cartoons like this one used exaggerated figures and captions to comment on it.
